NEW CARLISLE | Jordan Chester is still batting 1.000.
The Boone Grove freshman remained unbeaten Saturday, breezing to the A Division title at the New Prairie Invitational before heading off to play in a soccer match for the Wolves.
"Since I won, I'm like, 'Oh man, I'm better than I thought I was,'" Chester said after her 30-second victory in a time of 19 minutes, 19 seconds. "I hope to keep undefeated as far as I can."
Chester unknowingly helped Hebron to the team championship. The Hawks, stationed next to Chester, well outside at the start line, followed her strong lead up the narrow opening chute and soared to victory, 84-152, over runner-up Fairfield.
"Our goal is to run here two more times," Hebron coach Mike DeFries said, referring to the postseason. "We're training harder. The girls are in a lot better shape. They're a lot more focused. We've been preaching all season to get up front. If you're not in front going into the woods, you're stuck."
Trisha Hanlon showed the way for the Hawks, crossing fourth in 20:17. Jordan Hanaway was seventh and Liz MacNeil 12th for Hebron, with Kouts' Courtney Bennett (eighth) and Wheeler's Christina Blair (ninth) in between.
"We knew we had to get out and work our butts off the first mile," Hanlon said. "I'm really excited to win. I know we have a really strong team and I'm proud of how hard we've worked this year."
Perennial contender Valparaiso wasn't a factor in the AAA race, finishing sixth (241), but the Vikings weren't without representation. Megan Ranegar raced a strong third (18:22), heading all Region runners. Injuries have kept Ranegar out of the meet previously.
"I felt awesome at the end, like I could've gone harder," Ranegar said. "I was really surprised. The weather was perfect, there was a lot of competition. I was in my element. I still kind of have last year's mentality. I get up there and I get really nervous seeing all those girls. It's really cool."
Lake Central cemented its status as the area's top team, besting Carroll (Fort Wayne) and Northridge 89-107-115.
"This is big," L.C. coach Denise Fitzgerald said. "We've never stayed for the team awards."
