BAND CONCERT | Highland

The Highland Community Concert Band will perform its spring concert at 7 p.m. March 30 at Lincoln Center, 2450 Lincoln St. The theme is"Music of American Wars." It's designed to appeal to veterans and nonveterans alike. The band will perform June 12 and July 17 at the gazebo in Main Square Park, Fifth Street and Ridge Road. The Highland Parks and Recreation Department sponsors the free concerts.

WOMEN'S CONNECTION | Schererville

Schererville Women's Connection offers a Distinctively Yours luncheon program from noon to 1:30 p.m. April 3 at Briar Ridge Country Club, 123 Briar Ridge Drive. Huckabees Home Accents of Crown Point will be featured, and Mary Haddad of Adrian, Mich., will give a talk titled S is for Survival & Success. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Lunch costs $15. Make a reservation by March 31. The next luncheon is May 7.

BOOK SIGNING | East Chicago

Local author Dr. Adolphus Anekwe, a clinical assistant professor at Indiana University Northwest Medical Center, will sign his book "The Stamped Image" from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 26 in the gift shop at St. Catherine Hospital, 4321 Fir St. The science fiction thriller is about the chromosomal marking HLA B66. This marking is present in members of society who have committed heinous crimes. Could this correlation be enough to determine predisposition to criminal intent? What happens when everyday citizens test positive, and can any legal action be taken for merely preventative measures? What are the risks?  Anekwe queries all this and more in "The Stamped Image." Copies will be sold in the hospital’s gift shop. Anekwe also will do several readings from the book.

CROSS-STITCHERS | Schererville

First Tuesday Cross-Stitchers meets at 6:30 p.m. April 1 at the Lake County Public Library's Dyer-Schererville branch, 1001 W. Lincoln Highway. Join other-cross stitchers for an evening of stitching, conversation and relaxation. Get assistance with a difficult project, share new ideas and view the latest cross-stitch magazine issues and books.

MAKING MEMORIES | Hammond

Making Memories, a family enrichment program, will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, April 1 to May 6, at the Hammond Public Library, 564 State St. Families can make a keepsake book and learn about art, writing, bookmaking, visual art and drama at this free five-week series. Families receive a free boxed lunch and free book each week. A Spanish interpreter is provided. The program is for children in third to sixth grade and at least one parent. Details are with youth services. This program is free thanks to the Legacy Foundation and other funders, brought to the library by South Shore Arts; East Chicago, Hammond and Gary libraries; Books, Brushes & Bands for Education; South Shore Chamber Orchestra; and Towle Community Theater.

BUSINESS SERIES | Highland

The Highland Chamber of Commerce will host a Business Education Series Lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 25 at the Lake County Public Library's Highland branch, 2841 Jewett St. Series are open to the public for $10 and to chamber members for $8, which includes choice of box lunch from Heavenly Ham. The sessions covers employee benefits - pitfalls and solutions, compliance and using employer cost-saving tools. Insurance counselor Tom Brown will be the moderator. Will Glaros, of Employer Benefit Systems, will talk about complying with federal and state regulations. He is past president of the Northern Indiana Association of Health Underwriters. RSVP.

GENEALOGY DATABASE | Merrillville

Genealogy computer database searching will be available from 10 a.m. to noon April 1 at the Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. 81st Ave. Participants join the Indiana librarian for a fun class featuring a trio of genealogy subscription computer databases: Ancestry Library Edition, Heritage Quest Online and ProQuest Obituaries. Learn how to search for ancestors in censuses, family histories, vital records, and more. Participants may bring their ancestor’s names, dates, and places. Seating is limited; registration is required.

CHESS KNIGHT | Schererville

Chess Knight is at 6:30 p.m. March 24 at the Lake County Public Library's Dyer-Schererville branch, 1001 W. Lincoln Highway. All school-age children (kindergarten and older) from beginners to advanced can participate in a game of chess to learn new strategies and improve their skills. Bring a friend and join the group that meets the fourth Monday of each month. Register in advance.

BRANSON TRIP | Munster

Munster Parks and Recreation Department offers a trip June 25 to 29 to Branson and the Ozarks. Shows and visits include lunch in Springfiled, Western Deerfield Inn in the Ozarks, Yakov Smirnoff show "Little Switzerland," Passion Play, Magnetic Mountain, Thorncrown Chapel, trolley tour, dinner show aboard Showboat Branson Belle, Twelve Irish Tenors, "Noah, the Musical" and lunch at Landry's in St. Louis. Trip includes lodging, nine meals, five shows, home pickup/return and $25 in Travlchecks.
