CROWN POINT | Mayor David Uran now will walk in the city's Fourth of July parade with breast cancer survivors after the parade committee made a decision Friday night to change parade protocol.
"I feel good, but it's not about me. It's about the organization, and we're excited to walk with the cancer survivors," said Uran, who said he was so frustrated last week he was considering not walking in the parade.
Uran said he wanted to use his traditional position as the first elected official in the parade to spotlight an organization he thought deserved more recognition. He said he planned to have breast cancer survivors ride the city's trolley with him at the front of the parade to bring attention to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, an organization dedicated to breast cancer research.
Donations raised at the citywide picnic July 5 are set to be given to the foundation.
Last week, Bev Huber, one of the committee's leaders, said allowing the cancer survivors at the front would violate parade protocol, citing tradition and fairness as reasons for the protocol.
According to a statement issued Monday, the committee changed its mind as a courtesy to the city because its the host city of the parade. The mayor now may be accompanied by a nonprofit entry of up to 40 people and a vehicle.
Uran said after he laid out his plan to spotlight a different organization at the parade each year, he and the committee agreed he was just looking to help a nonprofit.
"I'm glad we were able to work out the details," he said.

We keep reading about these changes and what you want and what you get...I'm not complaining about every change, but I will say its your way or the highway right now, and I don't think I completely agree with that notion!
Don't let your head explode...keep grounded. "

What a good cause. I had a scare couple years back. Thank God mine wasn't cancer. Bless those that have survived and the families for the ones that didn't. "

I understand all about 'protocol'. And having breast cancer really, really, violated my personal protocl!! Thanks for raising everyone's awareness about a terrible disease. "
