CROWN POINT | This holiday week marks the second year of firework restrictions for the city since the Crown Point City Council adopted an ordinance limiting the dates and times residents can shoot off consumer fireworks.
Since June 8, the Crown Point Police Department has fielded 28 calls regarding fireworks, said Assistant Chief Jim Janda.
"Some have been unfounded, and some have been directed to the ordinance," he said.
Because the ordinance is still in its infancy, offending residents have been given a copy of the ordinance and told they were in violation instead of being cited or fined, Janda said.
The method has worked well so far, and there haven't been any known repeat offenders, police said.
Consumer fireworks may be set off between 5 p.m. and two hours after sunset until July 9. On Friday, the hours are from 10 a.m. to midnight.
Those convicted of violating the ordinance could be fined between $100 and $2,500.
